This year’s State of Logistics Report will have a new look and feel. The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) publication, presented by Penske Logistics for the eighth straight year, will feature a new author and researcher, A.T. Kearney, and distinguished new panelists. The 27th edition will be made public on June 21 at the famed National Press Club.

Sean Monahan, A.T. Kearney partner and operations practice leader – Americas, will for the first time serve as the report’s lead author and also sit on the panel.

The proliferation of technology to support supply chain management has created a high-stakes card game of decision-making for shippers as they design their IT road maps. Is it time to hold, fold or double down? Many shippers need to ask themselves these tough questions:

  • Do we in-source the activity or outsource to a 3PL?
  • Should we run hosted applications or be cloud-based?
  • Is a subscription model more effective than licensing software?

Inevitably, supply chain executives must start by marrying the supply chain back-of-the-house systems to their organization’s front-of-the-house ERPs. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is slated to release its final rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act for the Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food by March 31, 2016. The rule will prescribe sanitary transportation practices to ensure that food transported by motor vehicles or rail remains safe. It is expected to take effect in 2017.

The proposed rule dictates a number of specific requirements, ranging from materials used to hand washing. While the rules are not expected to specify use of particular technologies, they are likely to require more data recording and tracking throughout the food and beverage supply chain.

The fresh supply chain is evolving and consumers have more choices than ever when it comes to fresh foods. That shift is creating a number of opportunities within the fresh supply chain, said Andy Moses, senior vice president of global products for Penske Logistics.

Moses spoke during the Trading Partner Alliance Supply Chain Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, earlier this year and outlined opportunities that exist within the fresh supply chain.

In the food industry, freshness drives business, but achieving that freshness is a complex process. Retailers are looking for more frequent, smaller deliveries of a wider variety of products and seeking greater assurances that food is kept safe throughout the supply chain. At the same time, a growing number of retailers are offering fresh food and they have higher expectations of service.

Global Trade magazine has named Penske Logistics to its 2016 list of America’s Top Trucking Providers, highlighting the company’s dedicated contract carriage services. In the February-March issue, the publication explained of its DCC listing: “when you don’t require an entire fleet but resources don’t permit, these partners can fill that need with trucks that can act as your own company vehicles.”

Hosted by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), it takes place at the New Orleans Marriott from February 22 to February 24.
